A nationwide pet adoption event is helping get animals out of Oklahoma shelters and into their forever homes.
For the next two weeks, all pet adoptions will be only $25 at Sand Springs Animal Welfare.
The "Empty the Shelters" adoption event is sponsored by BISSELL Pet Foundation and Dogtopia. Sand Springs Animal Welfare is one of seven shelters in the state participating.
Animal Welfare Coordinator, Tracy Arvidson, said it helps boost adoptions at a time when the shelter is completely full. She said it also helps make adopting a pet more affordable.
"Everything is so expensive right now," Arvidson continued saying, "Even dog food, pet supplies, and all that kind of stuff is so expensive. So, being able to lower our adoption rate really helps a lot and people can afford usually $25."
She said right now, the shelter is at full capacity with dog's double and tripled up in kennels. The hope is the discounted adoption rate will help more animals find a home.
"If we get too full, we have to euthanize for space and we try really hard not to do that," Arvidson said. "We have a really great live release rate, but it is just really stressful, and it is really hard to have to make those decisions."
